Stories For Kids

Stories for kids play an important role in their growth and development. Stories enhance a kid’s memory, speech development, linguistic and many more cognitive skills. Stories encourage a child to be a good listener. They nurture interpersonal intelligence in them and develop social skills. Stories help kids to imagine and enhance their creativity. And perhaps the best aspect of stories is that they are great fun for kids! And kids simply love them. Stories for kids have been used for ages as a healthy way to entertain and engage. Stories come in all shapes and sizes. Two important things for parents to note are: 1. the language of choice and 2. age of the child. For kids to enjoy stories, they have to be age appropriate. For example, take the story of ‘Heidi’. It was authored by Johanna Spry. The same story can be simplified and read to toddlers. One finds abridged versions of the story for children in the age group of 6-12 years. And full unabridged version can be enjoyed by young adults and adults. Parents have to be mindful of the quality and age-appropriateness of the language used, before selecting a story. Stories can classified in many ways: funny, short, moral, religious, folk tales, bedtime. In India, there are many languages with a great tradition of story telling for kids. Tales from our epics such Mahabharat and Ramayan, adventures of Bal Krishna, folk tales such Panchatantra, Jataka, Akbar Birbal, Tenali Rama etc. continue to be popular till date. Classic international children’s stories such as those by Hans Christian Andersen, are also popular in India.
