Screen time is the amount of time spent using a device such as a computer, smartphones, video games or other electronic gadgets. From a child perspective, screen time is a topic of growing concern for parents, psychologists, health organisations and even governments. Children today are attracted to these devices because of the auditory and visual nature of the content. Also children learn from imitating and when they observe their parents stuck to these devices, they also crave for it. We know that higher exposure to screen time for kids may not be good for their development and their health. But many a times, we allow this to happen because of demands of our practical reality. It has become a practice to ensure that the child is not bothering anyone. Parents should read and follow expert recommended guidelines regarding screen time for children of different age groups before handing over any electronic gadgets to their children. There can be family movie times so that the screen time is shared and monitored. TVs in bedrooms must be avoided to let children retire on time without any exposure to screens. Alternate measures to engage children like book reading or playing traditional games can be adopted too.
