Children should be encouraged to read books. Modern research has clearly established the importance of such an activity. Reading books to kids has a significant positive effect in cognitive development, improves listening, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, literacy, language, general knowledge and imaginative skills. If your child develops a habit of reading, it has many more benefits in the long run. But reading books to young children can be quite challenging. Children, as we all know, find it hard to focus on any activity for long. There are various ways by which we can make these reading sessions a fun and learning experience for the child. Engaging the child while reading a book by asking questions in between or relating the story with similar events in your child’s life can help increase his/her interest towards reading. Similarly, setting up a routine for the child for this activity and removing all the distractions during the activity, will be helpful. One can also visit bookshops and libraries regularly with children to provide them with the inspiration to read more. Having a small library at your home also helps. Parents should remember that children learn by imitating. Seeing their own parents read books helps children to develop the habit naturally.
