Parenting style is the overall way of parent handling a child and his/her development. Parenting styles develops over time, depending on the practical reality and natural personality of the parent. It is also influenced by the belief system held by a parent on what is good for their child. Though every parent has a unique style, it can be classified into 3 broad categories. They are Authoritarian, Permissive and Authoritative. Authoritative parents are protective, demanding, responsive and hold high degree of expectation. Authoritarian parents are demanding and not responsive but believe more in excessive and extensive punishment with the intention to make their child to survive in this unforgiving society. Permissive parents are responsive but not demanding, friendly and rarely punish their child. Research conducted in western countries conclusively show that authoritative style leads to successful, generous and well-liked children. Authoritarian parenting generally leads to overly shy or aggressive children. Permissive parenting, is good in short bursts, but can lead to severe consequences in later stages. A recent study done in India with regards to Children and Academic Performance too indicates that authoritative style is the best. Social withdrawal and social anxiety problems in Indian children are observed to worsen with authoritarian style while they improve if the authoritative style is used. We provide various articles to enhance authoritative style of parenting. Also, you can visit our website where we provide you with certain tests to check your parenting styles.
