Cognitive Development in Children

Cognitive development in children relates to information processing, conceptual resources, perceptual, language learning and many other skills that develop in a child over time. Cognitive development in children is a gradual process from infancy through adolescence to adulthood. Intellectual development is often used as a synonym to cognitive development. More informally, it is also called as mental development. It represents how person perceives, thinks, and understands the world. Jean Piaget, the pioneering Swiss psychologist is often credited as the founding father of this field of study. His theory of cognitive development in kids continues to relevant till date. Cognitive development, according Piaget has four broad stages : sensorimotor stage (0-2 years), pre-operational stage (2-7 years), concrete operational stage (7-11 years) and formal operational stage (11-older). There are modern theories that have either built upon Piaget’s theory or have developed alternative models to explain cognitive development in children. The study of cognitive development is now a multi-disciplinary field spanning neuroscience and psychology. Cognitive development in kids starts from infancy. Children from from early on, observe and interact with the world. From the perspective of parents, it is important to note that the environment that the child grows up in plays an important role in the child’s cognitive development. The child’s cognitive development is a function of its genetic makeup and its interactions with the environment. Parents and primary caretakers have an important role to play in the child’s cognitive development. They can help in the child’s cognitive development by providing a safe, secure, warm, nurturing and stimulating environment for the child.
