At 15 to 18 months, a typical toddler understands much more than he or she is able to put into words. By 18 months your toddler may use between six and 20 simple words. By 24 months, children tend to use at least 50 words and are also starting to use two-word phrases. Development of speech skills is correlated with the child’s interpersonal skills and academic success in children. Early speech and language interventions can help children be more successful with reading and writing. Parents should remember that all children may not speak at the same pace and some children develop speech related skills faster than others. To assist children reach their speech and language milestones, parents could engage them in a variety of speech development activities at home. Talk to your kid as much as possible, the more you talk to your toddler, the more new words she’ll learn, and the better she’ll get at talking. Books also help develop children’s speech, language, communication skills and discover new words that add to their vocabulary.
